Heavy and melodic are the first two words that come to mind upon my first listen to The Rough Path of Nihilism. I would say if you needed to classify them it would have to be Power/Prog/Doom metal. These guys have a very unique sound and direction to them-I can hear influences of many types here, Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus are the obvious ones, but I can also hear a little Iron Maiden, Mercyful Fate and Type O Negative in certain songs too.
These guys have been around in one form or another since 1993. There have been some lineup changes throughout this time period. They have endured some tragedy in losing some members. This really makes them earn their doom metal wings! Hailing from Greece, Sorrow's Path is a group of AWESOME musicians with some very creative song writing skills.
The album is very moody and the opening song, All Love is Lost, starts with a beautiful acoustic intro. At first listen, I really did not care for vocalist Angelos Ioannidis voice. After listening to the entire album a few times, it has really grown on me. He has a very distinct tone and accent. The song crescendos into a ripper with shredding guitars and exemplary drumming. Fotis Mountouris is an animal on the drums! His playing is one of my personal highlights of this album.
Fetish is among one of my favorites-it has a shredding bridge and haunting female vocals on the chorus. The break in the middle has an almost operatic feel to it. Very cool metal song!
Getting Closer is my favorite-the odd timing and riffs remind me of a Dream Theater song I can't quite put my finger on. The musicianship and talent of this band shines through on this epic metal tune.
Empty Eyes and Blackened Hearts is the first single and video from the album. Solid performance here too.
All in all-if you are a Candlemass or Solitude Aeturnus fan-you will more than likely get into Sorrow's Path. If you haven't listened to either of the aforementioned bands-give Sorrow's Path a spin. You will really appreciate them!
