First, today is a sad day for us thrash heads, cause we remember when one of thrash metal's greatest musicians passed away on this day in 1986 at the young age of twenty four.
Clifford Lee Burton was born in Castro Valley, California in 1962. His musical career began as a young child when his father introduced him to classical music and the piano. When he was only thirteen years old, he picked up the bass guitar and dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the instrument and within a few years he would have a chance encounter with two other musicians, Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield and the rest is history.
He died shortly before 7 a.m. on a cold fall day two miles north of Ljungby, Sweden when the driver of the tour bus in which Metallica was traveling lost control of the vehicle and skidded off the road. There has always been a controversy as to what, or whom, is actually responsible for the tragic accident.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame with the other members of Metallica on April 4, 2009.
Later that year, a biography written by Joel Mclver titled: "To Live Is To Die The Life And Death Of Metallica's Cliff Burton " was published. Cliff's band mate, Kirk Hammett wrote the foreword.
A young man of incredible talent, who was incredibly open minded to various sources of musical inspiration is, and always will be, sorely missed by his fans.
DISCORD FEST TAKES PLACE DESPITE POLICE CRACKDOWN
This last weekend the California Discord Fest ran into a big time snag by being shut down by the cops, here's our Josh giving the lowdown:
The Discord Fest in LA got shutdown on Saturday by LA's finest as I'm sure there weren't any bigger crimes or threats in Los Angeles and this had to be stopped! "We can't have kids having fun at a DIY venue! They must pay taxes and have the proper permits!" Bullshit. Anyway it got shutdown due to the Vortex not having the proper permits to operate as music venue.
But not all was lost! Rito (drummer SMD and captain of the LA Pyrate Punx) stepped up and saved the day for many a pit hungry punk rock fiend! He offered up his house and handed his address out to 3 or 5 friends and that was enough to set off a punk rock frenzy that the neighbors might have mistaken for a small earth quake! The LA Pyrate Punx house ( Rito's crib) was transformed in a small punk rock club as ~ 150 squeezed in to hear the jams of MAGRUDERGRIND (MD), THEORIES (Seattle), and TRANSIENT (Portland). And that's just who played! Todd and Dino from DYSTOPIA where there as well as dudes from BLOWN TO BITS, BLOODY PHOENIX, and GHOUL (un-masked).
"It was magical and just absolutely amazing! People from Sacramento, Fresno, San Diego, etc. It was so intense that I have shoe prints on my living room ceiling. I'll never forget it! It was totally fucking nuts!" - Rito (SMD, captain LA Pyrate Punx)
On Sunday RATTUS, GHOUL, MANGE and DROPDEAD played at the Riff Haus in Fullerton.
That's how you do it. Just when the man has his boot on your throat and all seems lost it only takes one dude to step up and turn a potential disaster into a magical evening. And you know what? That's the punk community coming together, a few dedicated people able to direct 150+ plus to house to keep the show going! I've seen it in action! On one trip to LA we got there to find out our show was cancelled but the LA Pyrate Punx, with just a few phone calls had us relocated at a house under an overpass in Whittier and with the magic of the social networks there was ~ 200 people there. That was all pulled off in a just a few short hours. LA Pyrate Punx get shit done! - Josh Mosh
Thrashhead would like to thank photographer Sergio Amalfitano for providing the following images from the party! All images are fully copyrighted and may not be used without the expressed permission of the photographer. There's more news after the gallery.
Bones Booking Promotions who set up the California Discord Fest released this statement:
"First of all, we would like to apologize SINCERELY to all of the people who had bought tickets. We totally understand how you feel, and it is a terrible thing that happened. We know you want refunds, and we wish we could accommodate everyone, but unfortunately that is not possible. We still had to pay the venue, still had to pay the security, had already paid for the permits, fire marshall, three parking lots, all of the bands (and the bands with guarantees DID get paid, despite people claiming otherwise), flights, sound engineer, etc. We did our best to make up for the show, by having the headliners play 2 separate sets (because the venue was so small and we wanted EVERYONE to get a chance to see them) at the ONLY venue that would give us the time on such short notice. And I know charging some people $10 was pretty wack, but that wasn't us. That was the venue so they could make their overhead and pay their crew. It sucks but it had to be done.
For those wanting an explanation, here's the rundown. We have been planning this show for 9 months. We went to the city, the police dept., and the fire dept., talked to everyone we could and got every permit we needed. We worked with the venue to make prices as low as possible (I know 30 a day seems like a lot of money, but given the massive overhead on bands, flights, sound, and everything else, we still had to come out of our own pocket on this). We had a fire marshall on hand making sure everything was fine, safe, and legal. We had security. We even had the police show up during the day. They checked out the venue/show, checked our permits, said everything was fine, then left. However, during Resistant Culture's set, a large police force showed up. They put our security against the wall, and asked to speak with us. During this time, they tried to talk circles around us, claiming our permits were invalid, that the show was illegal, etc. The fire marshall had our back, we showed them our permits (which are definitely valid), and they still came in, slapped us with a $10000 citation and a notice to appear in court, and shut us down. It all comes down to LAPD flexing their muscles on a bunch of kids trying to enjoy a punk show. We will be fighting this in court, but what's done is done - even if (and when) we win our case, the show is still over, and everyone is still fucked. For this we apologize. We will do our best to make it up to you. Please understand though, we didn't keep any money. We did not do this for many and didn't make a dime. We are not thieves, we are just punks that wanted to bring a good show to all of you. What happened was completely out of our control, and we are going to be fighting it with the city, so please understand where we are coming from. We apologize again, so much, and thank you for understanding."
Shoot, since we mentioned Ghoul, we have some news which aint such a bummer; Ghoul announced that preorders are available for the new Ghoul "Transmission Zero" LP/CD, their 4th album to date!
Whatchya waitin' for? Score it now!
Another cool thing is that they also have an awesome animated video being streamed by the folks over at Metal Injection...pretty sweet!
Speeking of cool, as both you and I know, Evile's "Five Serpent's Teeth", an album which we reviewed, was released yesterday to much fanfare, but you know what makes a band great, as Ronnie James Dio said, is when they remember that the fan is the person who truly matters.
Evile, is one such band, they went on a road trip with a copy of their album in hand and left their home in Huddersfield to Stockton-On-Tees in the U.K. to hand deliver the album to their fan Tony Dobson! Not only did they hook their homie up by hanging out and listening to the album with him over some brews, but on their return to Huddersfield, they invited a fan into the studio as they rehearsed! That's how you build a loyal following in the metal world, way to go Evile! Just look at these guys, pure stoke!
