This week we saw the passing of an extraordinary musician, Jesse Morris; he left this world on the anniversary of the day he came into it. He was only 27 years of age.
Jesse Morris was a well known figure in the underground music community of the Bay Area as well as to Bay Area Rapid Transit commuters... (Read this outstanding article/interview to learn more about Jesse).
A friend of his Ami Lawless, Captain of the Frisco PyratePunx, had this to say to ThrashHead:
" Jesse Morris was an amazing man who was loved by most people that had the pleasure of knowing him and made instant fans with his music. to call him the "punk Johnny Cash" was a compliment to Johnny Cash!
Jesse Morris had more raw talent than most lifelong musicians, he was only 27 when he selfishly took his own life but managed to cram a lifetime of experience both good & bad into those too few years he spent with us. with a wicked sense of humor and a very dark artistic sneer Jesse could make anyone laugh. He was great at imitating anyone of his heroes like GG Allen, Hank Williams and Henry Rollins.
...I know that he is now at peace with himself."
With heavy hearts we send out our deepest condolences to Apphia Williams, his family and to all those who had the honor of calling him friend.
There will be a Benefit Show for the family of Jesse Morris held at The Uptown Nite Club on 1928 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland this Friday. The show begins at 9p.m. and ends at 1p.m., it's 21 and up and admission is "$8 or as much as you'd care to donate". If you are in the area...what better way to pay respects and help those he left behind by enjoying a night of music?
In the meantime, we leave you with a song, "Gonna Die With My Boots On" from Jesse Morris and the Man Cougars (just click the round play button below) as well as a video of him performing FEAR'S "I Love Living In The City".

Next, you know damn well we love us some heavy hittin' tunes...you know we are all about the heavy stuff, but you also know that we appreciate all music when it's soulful and good, and we ran across a band recently from down under which is just that...good oldschool style rock n roll from The Gypsy Bangles.
Here's a short bio: " Formed in 2010 as a vehicle for guitarist/singer/songwriter Kegan DeBoheme's love of 70's rock & blues, The Gypsy Bangles pay a bluesy, hardrock head-nod to much groovier times with an affinity for the gruff vocals of Paul Rodgers and James Hetfield in their youth with screaming guitar leads reminiscent of Freddie King and Mark Farner. 2011 saw the release of their first EP "Women & Whiskey", 2012 is set to see them launch a new EP "Pay Your Dues", plan their first full-length LP and continue touring Australia."

For you fans of Napalm Death, we've just found out that their 14th studio album is going to be entitled Utilitarian and will be out Feb 27th in Europe and the 28th in the States on Century Media Records.
Mark "Barney" Greenway comments: "After some deliberation, we have decided on Utilitarian as the album title. We generally try to avoid generic titles, and this seemed to have a lot of scope to it. I won't explain the full meaning of Utilitarianism here because it's an ethical theory, and as ethical theories go, the depth and debate around it is quite heavy at times. It has a certain 'morality' aspect to it and that isn't something that drives me, so I also certainly have issues with it."
"So, rather than just nail that straight to the mast, of course we wanted to put our own spin on it by suggesting that those (i.e. the utilitarian in us, perhaps) who try to challenge everything, or fight against conventions, well, we go through periods of real self-doubt where we wonder if we're really making a difference. I suppose the conclusion is that, for the sake of all our freedoms, you should never stop, as even the feeling of resistance is at least a signal to those who would like to entirely control and dominate us - meaning everything from our instinctive behavior to our human entitlement to walk the earth unprovoked."
"Regarding the album overall, the final creases should be ironed out fairly soon, and immediately after that, we thought it would be good to top it off with a few UK dates. We've been playing one new song ("Quarantined") out on a tour of Canada and it's been well received, so we hope to perhaps throw in another one for now. Either way, we'll be bouncing off the walls again near you very soon. Cheers all."
Napalm Death will be playing the following festivals:

That will certainly be an album to keep an eye out for!
Ok, everyone likes a good movie, how about a good documentary, how about a documentary of an oldschool punk hangout where might have actually seen shows and lost a tooth at? Well then, you might want to check out "We Were Feared" directed by Jonathan W.C. Mills here's a description of it:
"This film chronicles the rise and fall of The Cuckoo's Nest,' a famous Socal Punk Rock Club that was not only the birthplace of slam dancing but a key incubator to the surf, skate and extreme sports culture of today.
During the late 1970's 'The Nest', as it was known, played host or was home to almost every influential and soon to be famous punk bands including: Black Flag, The Ramones, Iggy Pop, TSOL, The Dead Kennedy's, The Circle Jerks, Fear and The Vandals, whose song, 'The Legend of Pat Brown,' chronicles one of the more famous incidents at the The Nest.
The saga of the The Nest and its owner Jerry Roach is one of the great untold stories of punk rock, until now."
Apparently it is screening tonight in Cali. It may take a bit, but the makers of the film are trying to work out some distribution deals to see if they can get this onto DVD here shortly...we'll keep you updated when it does hit. Take a gander at the trailer...
