For nearly a quarter century now the name Cannibal Corpse has not only been synonymous with all that is offensive, explicit and extreme in metal but has also been viewed as the epitome of the death metal genre to the world for just about as long.
I honestly can't think of a worse band for that job. I miss the days when Cannibal Corpse were a seemingly dangerous and violent act that I only knew from that scene in Ace Ventura. Live Cannibalism is the first live album I ever owned and it's also probably my favorite for that same reason.
I've seen them live before and they put on a tight show but they were also kind of putting out the same album in one form or another between 1999 and 2006, in my opinion. I really enjoyed Kill and Evisceration Plague though. Erik Rutan's production kind of saved Cannibal Corpse for me so I'm glad to hear them continuing their work with Rutan on the new album, Torture.
Like Evisceration Plague, Torture not only brings the brutal pummeling old school New York death sound (make no mistake Floridians, they're a New York band) but also delivers some really cool doomed out tracks too. Cuts like "Scourge Of Iron" and "Followed Home Then Killed" are my favorites because they remind me more of that Gallery Of Suicide, late 90's era.
Torture is a strong album from a legendary band but what're they trying to say? Song titles like "Intestinal Crank" and "Caged.. Contorted" are good for a laugh but haven't we had those laughs in the past? Shouldn't we be looking towards the future? What is the future of a band like Cannibal Corpse? Bands like Cannabis Corpse? Probably. I mean no offense. It's worth a listen if you're a fan but if you're not a fan this won't convert you. It's cool that they still put out albums and tour though... Great job!
